Successful end to Innovation Festival 2006

The two-month Innovation Festival 2006 came to an end with a closing ceremony held on 1 December at Cyberport. Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr Anthony Wong, said the festival was well received by the general public. Some 60,000 participants have joined in a variety of interesting and innovative programmes which successfully reached the community at popular shopping malls and other places. The response to the workshops was overwhelming with more than 2,000 participants.

Programmes of the festival included 'My Favourite Inventions for Quality Living' (MFI) Competition, roadshows, over 120 sessions of design and technology DIY workshops and a youth innovation exhibition.

The aim of the festival was to inspire a lifelong interest in innovation and technology among the young generation and to promote Hong Kong as a "City of Innovation".

Co-presented by ITC and Towngas TGC, the Competition has gained enthusiastic responses from the community. In just five weeks, from 14 October to 22 November, nearly 8,000 votes were received from the public to support their most favourite inventions among the 19 final entries.

Winners received awards on 1 December at Innovation Festival 2006 Closing Ceremony. Champion projects are:
Junior Category - Bluetooth Q - Navigation System for the Blind or Visually Impaired and Intelligent Safety Alarm System
Adult Category - Automatic Insulation Device for Preventing Backflow of Gas Containing Bacteria and Poisonous Pollutants

Some of the winning projects are now displaying at the "Innovation Gallery" of the 41st HK Brands and Products Expo at HK Victoria Park.

Lucky draw was done on 24 November. The six lucky voters each won an in-kind prize sponsored by Towngas TGC valued at HK$1,000.

The Hong Kong Young Design Talent Awards 2006 were announced on 30 November by the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr Anthony Wong, at a press conference of the Business of Design Week 2006.

For Practising Designers:
- The two awards of the "DesignSmart Young Design Talent Award" go to Mr. Lee Sze Wik, Civic (fashion design) and Ms. Lee Sze Wing, Karen (art jewellery design);
- The "Young Design Talent Educational Award" goes to Mr. Hui Chun Pong, Ken (visual communication and industrial design).

For Design Students:
- The three awards of the "YIC Young Design Talent Award" go to Ms. Chan Hei (environmental design), Mr. Chan Hei Shing (graphic design) and Mr. So Wing Hei, Martin (fashion design).
 
The six awardees will be sponsored to enhance their professional skills overseas.
